Teufelsberg, Berlin

Teufelsberg is one of the most well known places among Berlin urban explorers, photographers and street artists. The “Devils mountain” is an artificially constructed hill with an abandoned US spy station on the top of it. During the Cold war West Berlin used it to listen what was going on in the East.

The hill appeared after the WWII when the stones of 400 000 ruined buildings were brought to the Grunewald forest. It rises 114,7 m above the sea-level.

2008 David Lynch В 2008 году режиссер Дэвид Линч attempt to buy the territory of Teufelsberg to build here a school for transcendental meditation. The city for some reason rejected his proposal.

Now the tower on the hill is surrounded by the fence. At the gate visitors meet the guys who present themselves as guards appointed by the owners. They offer “silent” tours around the object for 7 euros and proper tours for 15.

Teufelsberg is the highest point for graffiti in berlin. Street artists are welcomed here. If you have a spray with you, you can get in for free.

There are lots of people who want to paint something on the wall of the former spy station, the graffitis are painted over each other every day. “If you like something – take a picture of it now, tomorrow there will be a new one”.
